Festival of the Arts 2013
W
here does inspiration
come from? For this
year’s special exhibit,
it was the idea of feasts as a uni-
fying means of celebration and
the many ways artists find food-
related inspiration — from the
delicacy of a teapot or truffle to
the texture of steel in a kitchen,
even something as common-
place as … a spoon.
Food is often an important
part of celebrations, so Special
Exhibit committee members
chose art inspired by the culi-
nary arts for the Special Exhibit
2013 as a way of commemorating
the 50th anniversary of the Lake
Oswego Festival of the Arts.
Spoon: Culinary Inspired Art
is a chance to see how everyday
things can be more than utilitar-
ian – they can be works of art.
Through this experience visi-
tors can come to a greater un-
derstanding of the importance
of art in our lives, our society
and our culture.
“The language of creation
that exists in the kitchen is the
same as that in the art studio,”
said Mike Suri, a Portland-based
artist who will be featured in the
exhibit. “With this nourishment
in mind, I work with ingredients
of wood and steel.” To see vid-
eos of Suri and other Spoon art-
ists working in their studios, go

Take your time as you wander
through the five vignettes that
comprise the 2013 Special Exhib-
it. Each vignette is a whimsical
stage for all varieties of art that
might be found in one of the fol-
lowing rooms – Chefs of Steel,
an industrial kitchen; Who’s
Coming to Dinner? a fantasy
dining room; Aged to Perfec-
tion, a swank and sophisticated
Spoon special exhibit will appeal to all your senses
