J
erry Schilling doesn’t remember a
time before the 2012 Eastern Oregon
buck season when he’d filled his tag
on opening day.
Usually more selective on which buck he
shoots, Jerry had a different set of priorities
for the 2012 season. You see, it was the first
time his son, Jon Voight, 28, had decided to go
deer hunting.
Like any father, Jerry saw this as an oppor-
tunity to spend some high quality time with
his son. But he also saw it as an equally im-
portant opportunity to bring his son into an
important part of his own life — his life as a
big game hunter.
More than anything, Jerry wanted his son
to be successful. And admittedly, it had
thrown Jerry, 51, of Gresham, a little off his
game.
The crisp desert air of autumn greeted the
duo as they ventured out from camp at day-
break. True to fall mornings in Eastern Ore-
gon, the chill promised to quickly surrender
to rising temperatures into the 80s by mid-
day.
Surrounding them were menacing hill-
sides sure to challenged hearts and lungs, a
sea of sagebrush and small groves of juni-
pers. This is classic Eastern Oregon buck
hunting at its best.
In much the same way that Jerry’s son
waited for his introduction to hunting, Jerry
also came to the sport a little later than most.
Jerry, a 1979 Reynolds High School gradu-
ate, was introduced to hunting much like any-
one else; by following on the heels of family
tradition.
His father, Cliff, enjoyed hunting. And his
family’s extended hunting party numbered
about 25 people.
But while he grew up around hunting, it
wasn’t his first love. His heart from a young
age belonged to cars. It wasn’t until he turned
17 that he picked up a rifle and joined his dad
for a hunt.
