Aancing their business philosophy and their gardening philosophy, which can be

Westergreen and Poppe have lived in Molalla for 11 years. When they moved onto the
property, just short of five acres, there wasn’t much growing, except some Oregon white
oaks, which still stand like giants above what is now Out in the Garden Nursery.
“We started really small and kept it manageable,” Westergreen said, adding that it was a
Gyear or two before they were selling plants.
ARDENING
“The economy wasn’t doing really well, so we didn’t want to take on big debt,” she said.
“So we built it slowly.”
Now, the two of them are balancing the nursery business and the garden that is their
home. “It’s sometimes a challenge,” Westergreen said. “You know, gardeners are always
sharing and giving and trading and things and economically that doesn’t work really well.”

Though Westergreen can’t afford to give away plants, she does have something she offers for free. “A lot of where I give back is my knowledge,” she said. “There’s a lot in my head CM
that I’m glad to share.”
