is diet and walking exer-
cise made him famous
and put Subway on the
menu for average Ameri-
cans who want to get fit. Now, to cel-
ebrate his 15th anniversary of stay-
ing fit while eating Subway sand-
wiches, Jared Fogle is coming to
Portland to walk as part of the
American Heart Association’s 2013
Greater Portland & SWWashington
Heart & StrokeWalk on Saturday,
May 18.
At the event, Fogle will co-present
the AHA’s Lifestyle Change Award,
along with Adventist Health CEO
TomRussell.
Celebrating its 10th year, the
Heart & StrokeWalk fetes those
who have made lifestyle changes
and encourages others to take the
pledge to live healthier lifestyles
while raising the dollars needed to
fund life-saving re-
search and initia-
tives in Oregon
and Southwest
Washington. More
than 8,000 people
are expected to
participate in the
event, which kicks
off at the Vera Katz
Eastbank Espla-
nade in Portland and at Vancouver
Landing inWashington at 8:30 a.m.
“I’ve been in Portland a couple of
times before and am excited to join
the American Heart Association for
their 10th annual Heart & Stroke
Walk — an event that truly focuses
on creating a lifestyle change,” Fo-
gle said. “I still walk every day and
look forward to joining Portlanders
on this journey.”
Fogle was a 425-pound student at
Indiana University in March 1998
when he noticed a sign at the Sub-
way franchise near his apartment
promoting the chain’s “7 under 6”
menu: seven sandwiches each with
six grams of fat or less. He had a
6-inch turkey (no oil, mayo or
cheese) for lunch and a 12-inch veg-
gie sub for dinner, eating the same
sandwiches every day for about a
year. Combined with an exercise
regimen of walking, Fogle lost 245
pounds, and the rest is history.
