ennis Sinclaire describes the experience of be-
ing diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes as “a train
wreck in slow motion.”
At the time, diabetes seemed the lesser of Sin-
claire’s diagnoses. The northwest Portland resident was
initially able to manage the condition through smart di-
etary choices, and this regimen saw him through a year of
chemotherapy to treat his lymphoma and leukemia. Mean-
while, his heart condition required him to cut back on his
salt intake, which encouraged the kind of nutrition that
kept his body’s lack of insulin in check.
“My heart has actually gotten better, which apparently
it’s not supposed to,” he said, chuckling.
Sinclaire’s cancer has been in remission for nearly eight
years. Looking back, 63-year-old Sinclaire is surprised at
how quickly his trifecta of health issues came on in 2003,
the year he had to retire from a 15-year career in construc-
tion. That was the year fluid filled his lungs over the course
of three days, prompting a visit to the emergency room.
The rapid decline was shocking for a man who was used to
intense physical activity: he hadn’t been to the doctor since
he had left the Army in 1972.
For the first four years after his diagnosis, eating right
