HEALTHY LIFE: CANCER

Just because Oregon’s gray skies some-
times seem too common, doesn’t mean Or-
egonians are safe from skin cancer — the
most common form of cancer diagnosed in
the United States.
This skin condition can formafter prolonged
exposure to ultraviolet light. And since the sun
isn’t going away, it’s important to lean how to
protect one’s skin and be able to spot potential
abnormalities.
“Sun protection is important regardless of
the weather — even when it’s overcast, be-
tween 50 and 80 percent of UV (ultraviolet)
rays penetrate the clouds to reach the skin,”
according to Becky Wiley, marketing commu-
nications manager with The Skin Cancer
Foundation (SCF).
Wiley’s organization sheds light on why
year-round skin protection is essential. Skin
cancer is common— it accounts for nearly half
of all cancers in the United States — and its
risks can be minimized with sun protection.
Taking small steps can help: wear a wide-
brimmed hat, apply sunscreen daily and
wear UV-blocking sunglasses. Outside for an
extended period of time? Seek the shade and
cover up.
