Business Basics
Education:
University of Or-
egon - 1987
How’d You Get Started:
I was an
art director for cKS | Partners, an
advertising agency, in San Jose,
cA. A woman that I worked with
on a freelance basis presented
me with the opportunity to work
on a Master Bedroom wall proj-
ect, and I instantly fell in love with
decorative finishes, the art and
products involved and decided
that is what I wanted to do. We
launched a business in San Jose
specializing in decorative finishes
– Buena Vista Faux & Décor Paint-
ing. through that experience I
spent time becoming a specialist
in products, faux finishing tech-
niques, and developing my artis-
tic craft. When I moved back to
my native roots, Portland in 2001,
I launched my business here by
becoming involved in the NW
Natural Street of Dreams from
2002 to 2004. And, then after 20
years of being a decorative fin-
isher and expert, I opened Brush
& trowel. this is now my chance
to help professionals and sell the
very products I love.
Secrets to Success:
Listening to
my contractors’ needs and pro-
viding solutions. I strive to be a
resource for my decorative finish-
ers, utilizing my 20 years of expe-
rience out in the field, and giving
them the solutions for working
with clients, costing out a project,
profitability and how to use the
products. I want to be on the same
team with them – in a sense it’s a
partnership for mutual success. If
you are excited about what you do
every day, it’s contagious!
Measuring Success:
A happy
customer that refers others to
the store. there is no better mea-
surement than a referral.
Business Mentors or Heroes:
My
mom! She was on the forefront
of women in business and mana-
gerial positions back in the late
1960s through the 1980s. She
taught me some key business
skills around networking, lead
generation and to always smile.
Making the Call
Business Decision You’re Most
Proud Of:
Bringing in new prod-
uct to Brush & trowel – like Far-
row & Ball and Eco Stucco.
One You’d Like to Have Back:
You learn from your mistakes and
I wouldn’t trade that learning ex-
perience.
Principles I Use For Big Decisions:
When I make a decision, I’ll have
to own it – so I better be ready to
live with it.
The Best Business Advice You’ve
Received:
reviewing my goals
continually. that is so important
to staying on course.
Where I’ve Been, Where I am
Going
What I Learned From My First
Job:
If you want to get something
done, set your mind to it, and get
it done.
First “Career” Job:
Graphic de-
signer for a small ad agency in
tampa, Florida.
As a Kid, I Wanted to Be:
I just
wanted to be happy. I had that on
a resume once and was chided for
it…. I responded back, “that’s the
hardest goal in life to achieve.”
If I Weren’t Doing This, I’d Be:
A
ski patroller in Sun Valley!
Insider Information
If I Could Work For Free For Any
Cause/Charity, It Would Be:
to help
women reach their potential in
life.
I Need More Time on Weekends
For:
I have a strict policy to not
work on weekends. I want to get
the most out of life away from
work.

How they earn points: When a
current member recruits a new pri-
mary member (full membership)
they receive one (1) point. Each
time the newmember renews their
membership in the coming years,
the current member receives half
(.5) points. Each recruitment of an
affiliate or PrO member adds half
(.5) a point and renewal of affiliate
or PrO council adds a quarter (.25)
of a point.
