Introducing the ENERGY STAR
Thermal Enclosure checklist
ENErGY STAr® has released
a Thermal Enclosure System
verifier Checklist that replaces
the Thermal Bypass Checklist.
What’s the difference between
the two? Quite simply, the new
checklist has been updated to
help you achieve even greater
energy savings by building a
more efficient thermal enve-
lope or building shell.
As a builder, you already
know this aspect of the build-
ing process is something you
only have one chance to get
right, which is why ENErGY
STAr makes it a priority. The
checklist will prepare you
to meet and go above and
beyond Northwest ENErGY
STAr requirements. It should
be consulted throughout
the building process by all
applicable trades. Your veri-
fier can also help make sure
your project is in compliance and
meeting these requirements.
There are several key updates you’ll
find with the new Thermal Enclosure
Checklist. Sections have been added
that highlight new requirements for
reduced thermal bridging, and to en-
sure cracks in the building envelope
are fully sealed.
One specific item of note is a new
requirement that sheetrock must be
sealed to the top plate at all attic-wall
interfaces using caulk, foam or an
equivalent material. The sealant can
be either applied directly between
the sheetrock and the top plate, or to
the seam between the two from the
attic above.
The overall goal of the Thermal
Enclosure Checklist is to assist you in
constructing homes with a continu-
ous air barrier that is in full contact
with the insulation. By improving
the thermal envelope, the homes
you build will be more energy ef-
ficient, durable and safe. Starting in
2013, complying with the Thermal
Enclosure Checklist is also a require-
ment for homes receiving an EPSTM.
Brought to you by Energy Trust of Or-
egon, EPS is a score that rates newly
built homes based on their energy
efficiency and serves as yet another
great way to boost the value and ap-
peal of your homes.
