Happy “Na-
tional Remod-
eling Month”
to all of you. I
hope you are
having a really good month, and
that you are seeing signs of the
economy getting stronger and
producing more work for you.
Our PRO group is highlighted in a
proclamation signed by Governor
Kitzhaber, proclaiming May as Or-
egon Home Remodeling Month.
I encourage you to take pride in
that fact, and share with your cli-
ents that the Governor has recog-
nized PRO specifically in this state
wide proclamation! We have a
great PRO lunch meeting sched-
uled for May 15 at Parr Lumber in
Hillsboro. The food and the edu-
cation will be worth the drive, so
please reach out and bring your
sub-contractors and suppliers to
this great opportunity where re-
modelers and other vendors will
be present to network and learn
together. One of our favorite
events, the character-filled Divine
9 Chili Cook-off, is at the HBA on
the evening of May 30. This event
is not only fun, but this devoted
group of vendors and suppliers
are going all out to “blow the roof
off” with live music, crazy themes
and delicious chili. Please come
out and support their efforts. One
last note, we are starting to nomi-
nate PRO Executive Committee
officers and members for 2014.
If you have any interest in par-
ticipating on the committee that
directs the PRO group, please
let us know! Let Jessica M. at the
HBA office know as soon as pos-
sible, or contact any current PRO
Executive Committee member to
let us know that you’re interested.
Thanks to all of you, and have a
great month.

May is National and Oregon
Home Remodeling Month
May is National and Oregon
Home Remodeling Month and
provides us another chance to
cast the spotlight on why profes-
sional remodeling is one of the
best investments a homeowner
can make. The NAHB has created
materials to help us promote this
month long event and hopefully
all of us will find ways to promote
this in our own marketing and
social media efforts by visiting
their website at
www.nahb.org/
remodelers
under news and infor-
mation. You can also download
a copy of the Oregon remodel-
ing month proclamation from
the PRO Facebook page or the
May PRO e-Newsletter. Together
we can send a clear message to
homeowners that there is no
time like the present to improve
their home with a PROfessional!
Thank a D-9er!
On the May 30, the Divine 9
will produce their annual blow-
out extravaganza, the Divine 9
Chili Cook-off (see page 14 for
details)! The PRO has once again
been chosen as the beneficiary of
the proceeds from this event. The
Divine 9 Construction Marketing
Group produces this event at lit-
tle or no cost to the HBA and de-
livers one of THE BEST parties of
the year. Please take a second this
month to thank a D-9er. Divine
9 member companies include:

Mart, Gary’s Vacuflo, Lakeside
Lumber, The Legacy Group, Lewis

Want an easy way to choose
the best filter for an HVAC sys-
tem? Consider three factors: size,
filtration efficiency and resis-
tance to airflow. Choosing an air
filter that is sized correctly and
has an appropriate MERV rating
and reasonable pressure drop
across the coil will protect the
HVAC equipment and improve
indoor air quality.
Size—
Furnace filters come in
many sizes. Select a filter with the
correct width, height and depth.
All three are critical to ensure
proper fit and prevent unfiltered
air from bypassing the filter.
Filtration efficiency—
While
air filters improve indoor air
quality, their primary purpose
is to protect HVAC equipment
from dust, animal dander and
grime. In systems with coils in
the airstream (heat pumps, air
conditioners and condensing
gas furnaces), proper air filtra-
tion improves performance and
prevents equipment damage.
The Minimum Efficiency Report-
ing Value (MERV) is the accepted
standard for measuring filtration
performance and is a component
of the ASHRAE 52.2 standard. The
rating, ranging from one to 16 for
residential applications, mea-
sures a filter’s ability to remove
particles from .3 to 10 microns
in size. (Human hair typically
measures 50 to 100 microns). The
higher the rating, the greater the
filtration.
Resistance to Airflow—
The
rule of resistance to airflow is
that the higher the filter’s MERV
rating, the greater its resistance
to air flow, and the greater the
resistance to airflow, the less air
the HVAC fan can move. When
the airflow becomes too low, effi-
ciency drops and equipment can
be damaged. A filter’s resistance
to airflow is measured in pressure
drop across the filter in inches of
water column (IWC). Unless the
entire system is designed for fil-
ters with a large pressure drop, it
is good practice to use filters with
pressure drops of less than .10
IWC. In almost all cases this will
limit your choices to filters with
a MERV rating of less than eight.
Don’t assume that a filter with a
MERV of eight will have pressure
drop of less than .10 IWC. Many
hardware store filters have pres-
sure drop in excess of .2 IWC and
are not suitable for residential
equipment.
