When someone recently asked
me about the goals of the Home
Builders Foundation (HBF) I ex-
plained that one goal was to
move families with children out
of parking lots and into shelters.
Of course, this led to a lot of other
questions.
It is difficult for many to un-
derstand why families f ind
themselves living in their cars in
parking lots. It is often the result
of sudden job loss, domestic vio-
lence, eviction or abandonment.
It is also a surprise to many that
families with children represent
the fastest growing segment of
our nation’s homeless. I think it’s
because so many are invisible. We
simply don’t see them.
This year’s HBF Black & White
Gala and Auction promises to
be a fun evening to enjoy with
friends and colleagues. You will
also hear some inspiring stories
about howmembers of the home
building industry create safe and
dignified housing for the home-
less. I know you will feel a great
sense of pride about what our in-
dustry is doing in our community.
After I talk about the Founda-
tion’s goals I am also quick to talk
about our impact in the commu-
nity. Since 2005, the Foundation
has built or expanded shelter fa-
cilities that have added 134 new
beds used by over 500 people
each year by leveraging resources
within the home building indus-
try. The Black and White Gala will
help us do even more.
Please join us on April 5 to
celebrate what we have accom-
plished and to raise funds needed
to reach our goals. Thanks.

Last year’s HBF auction, Carnivale brought
out more than 350 revelers for a night of
Rio-inspired fun. The Foundation grossed over
$147,000 in 2012 at the auction and plans to
exceed $175,000 in 2013. A new locale and
a new theme will tempt guests- this year
will feature hosted wine courtesy of Milgard
Windows & Doors, a delicious catered dinner
by Jake’s, our annual Wine Wall of Hope, and
exciting silent and live auction packages. New
this year, the Black & White Gala will feature a
Dessert Dash, a fast-and-furious competition

for a night of excitement and fun, benefitting
the Home Builders Foundation.
