A Note from the Chair
Steve Stolze,
SLS Custom Homes &
Remodeling
As incoming Chairman of the
PrO, I must say I feel honored and
confident that this will be a great
year, not only for PrO as an orga-
nization, but for our HBA mem-
bers in all fields. I am optimistic
about the direction your PrO
group had decided to pursue
with a new configuration of the
Executive Committee, and the
energy that our membership is
providing in achieving our goals.
I encourage all of you to attend
the Monthly Meetings – not only
to learn about interesting topics,
but to enjoy the food and rela-
tionship building that occurs. We
each get better with the informa-
tion we absorb and the people
we meet. That is our goal this
year, to make each and every one
of us better at what we do. Please
attend, get involved and be part
of this experience.

Notes
In celebration of the character of the PROs
2012 Turkey Fry – a delight for the senses
The delicious aroma of frying
turkeys, a beautifully decked out
winter wonderland including
life-size nutcrackers and Santa’s
sleigh, and the joyful sound of the
“World Famous” HBF Christmas
Choir and Kazoo Band (with spe-
cial guests) made for a true feast
for the senses at the PrO’s 12th
Annual Turkey Fry sponsored by
Contract Furnishings Mart and
Congoleum. The biggest surprise
of the night came when Santa
himself popped up on the video
screen to reveal that he had invit-
ed some amazing musicians (and
HBA members) to join the choir
for a rocking rendition of Merry
Christmas Baby! Thank you Nate
Bond, Walter Cahall, Tim Doo-
little, Cam Dutz, Tim reed, Luke
Morley, Wendy O’Brien, Angela
Todd and ross Williams!
2011-2012 Professional remod-
elers Organization Chair Steve
Klingerman reviewed the many
programs and accomplishments
of the PrO year with a fun slide
show featuring everything from
the Tour of remodeled Homes to
the Santa House project and ev-
ery meeting, class, and program
in between.
PrO Character Awards were
given to those individuals and
companies who exemplified the
spirit of our organization in 2012.
This year saw the return of the
“Oatmeal Award” for exceptional
service and the 2012 recipients
were the ENTIrE team at Power-
house Construction for their ex-
ceptional and hercu-
lean efforts to ensure
the success of the
Santa House in 2012!
After recognition
was given to the PrO
Characters, Steve
Klingerman handed
over the microphone
and all of the respon-
sibilities and duties
therein, to the 2013
PrO Chai r Steve
Stolze. Steve introduced the fi-
nal character of the night, Santa
Claus, who awarded 13 fried
turkeys to eager and generous
guests, who raised over $1,100 for
Goose Hollow Homeless Shelter
through “Pluck the Bird” feather
sales and a generous matching
donation from Steve Frazier!
Thank you Contract Furnishings
Mart for, once again, providing us
with a wonderful feast and a fun-
filled celebration of our year at
the HBA PrO!

On December 18th at the An-
nual Turkey Fry, outgoing PrO
Chair Steve Klingerman had one
last opportunity to honor some
of the exceptional individuals and
companies that lend their time
and talents to the Professional re-
modelers Organization. The PrO
Character Awards are meant to call
attention to the contributions of
some of our most active and en-
gaged members. Below is a list of
this year’s honorees.
Masters of Fun (and generous to
boot) – The Divine 9:
Walter Cahall – NW Natural, Tim
Doolittle – Miller Paint, Jim Ferris
– red’s Electric, Karl Finkelnburg
– The Legacy Group, Steve Frazier
– Contract Furnishings Mart, Luke
Morley – Lakeside Lumber, Curt
Nelson – Lewis Audio Video, Scott
Ongley – Lisac’s Fireplaces, Gary
Phillips – Gary’s Vacuflo, and An-
drew Scheidt – Central Air.
If it weren’t enough that they
put on a great party, our friends
at the Divine 9 awarded all the
proceeds from their annual Chili
Cook-off in May to the PrO. The
Divine 9 also stepped in as one of
the largest sponsors of the BUILD
retreat this year and put together
one of the best dressed teams for
the PrO Bowl & Bet, taking home
third place in the process! We con-
sistently have D-9 support and
representation at PrO events and
on PrO committees, so for this
and many other reasons we’d like
to name the Divine 9 as TEN of our
2012 PrO Characters.
The Voice of the PRO -
Handyman Bob Strong
Handyman Bob has been featur-
ing a PrOmember every month on
“Work with a PrO Saturday” on his
radio show this year. Not only have
several members of the PrO been
able to go on the radio to promote
themselves and their businesses
– but Bob has been diligent in
promoting our whole Professional
remodelers Organization and the
value of working with a PrO! Thank
you Handyman Bob for being a
2012 PrO Character.
Bridge BUILD-er – Mitch Stanley
Mitch was asked by someone
from our state organization ear-
lier this year to describe what
made the PrO so successful. Mitch
thoughtfully put together a list of
ten reasons as to why the PrO has
come to be the third largest re-
modelers Council in the country
in such a short time… I won’t give
you the whole list, but let me tell
you that reasons number 1, num-
ber 2 and number 6 were – “At the
PrO, We have FUN.” Few people
are greater advocates of this man-
tra than Mitch Stanley. While taking
a very active role as the PrO rep-
resentative on the BUILD budget
committee and helping to bring in
over $1500 for each of the present-
ing organizations – Mitch stayed
true to his mantra…andmade sure
we had FUN!
Designed to Succeed –
Louise Farrar-Wegener
Louise is the Tour of remodeled
Homes chair for 2013, which is
the signature consumer event for
the PrO. She is an active and pas-
sionate member of PrO Exec and
along with her numerous contribu-
tions to the PrO. Louise is a great
representative of our council and
her profession to the greater HBA
as well. She contributed designs to
the Home & Garden show lounges,
as well as the exquisite VIP pavilion
at the Street of Dreams, where she
worked into the night in the days
leading up to the event to make
sure everything was ready and
beautiful for opening day!
Santa’s Biggest Helper - Patrick
Richardson
Patrick bravely stepped in to take
on the second year of the Santa
House at Bridgeport Village. He has
shepherded the process of bring-
ing the house back, when many
others had gotten their fill dur-
ing the first year! Patrick has also
bravely agreed to chair the Santa
House again in 2013! We’re not sure
about his sanity after that, but we
are very sure that Patrick richard-
son is a 2012 PrO Character.
The Heart of Giving – Dave
Szyplinski
Dave first became involved with
the PrO when he was with Endura-
wood, he stuck with us through
his transition to National Builders
Hardware, and he’s still a constant
and active force on the committee,
now that he is the Director of De-
velopment at Molly’s Fund Fight-
ing Lupus. Dave is always looking
out for the PrO and finding new
opportunities for us to promote
ourselves though charitable activi-
ties, like this spring’s Molly’s Fund
Walk and next year’s Serving Up
Style – Thank you for always keep-
ing the heart of the PrO in mind
Dave!
The Right Hand and The Left
Brain – Thomas Adams and
Theresa Springer
Thomas Adams and Theresa
Springer have attended every sin-
gle PrO Exec committee meeting
in 2012. And not just attended, but
participated and contributed! That,
in and of itself would be something
to celebrate considering not even
the Chair or Vice Chair can say that
– and they’re required to attend!
Because of their unique strengths,
Thomas and Theresa are two of our
most solid pillars at the PrO, con-
tributing in their own creative and
generous ways. Thomas has spon-
sored, contributed, or participated
in almost every HBA and PrO event
produced this year, and is the 2012
recipient of the HBA’s Trade Con-
tractor of the year award. Theresa
is a constant force for positive
change within our Executive com-
mittee and led the charge to help
the PrO contribute to the Build-
ing Industry Legal Defense Fund
this year. For these reasons and so
many more – Thomas Adams and
Theresa Springer are both 2012
PrO Characters.
First presented to Thomas Ad-
ams in 2011, this is the highest
honor that can be bestowed upon
a PrO character for exceptional
service.
The 2nd Annual Oatmeal
Award for exceptional service
Powerhouse Const ruc t ion:
Justan Proulx, Robin McKnight,
Michael Barnum, Nate Seiler,
and Vince Dolan.
Powerhouse Cons t ruc t ion
emerged as a true leader through-
out the build process for the Santa
House in 2011. So when the time
came this year to put the house
back together, we knew that
Justan Proulx knew the bones of
the house better than anyone else.
After generously agreeing to help
out again, the Powerhouse team
was the first to arrive on load-in
day, the last to leave, and they kept
us all laughing, having fun, and
firmly on track all day long! With
the uncanny memory of every nut
and timberlock, this tireless team
stayed until the entire structure
was complete and made sure that
the project was ready for the roof-
ers the next morning. For this rea-
son and the fact that they are true
leaders in giving throughout the
greater HBA and the Foundation –
the whole Powerhouse Construc-
tion crew are the recipients of the
2012 Oatmeal Award!
