For the HBF
For its first Painting a Better
Tomorrow shelter spruce-up day
back in 2006, the Home Builders
Foundation recruited Miller Paint
as a supplier and a consultant.
But once the Miller team got a
good look at the project at hand
— an interior and exterior paint
job of the Bridgeview Apartments
in North Portland, a complex for
men and women who struggle
with chronic homelessness — it
became obvious that there was
even more they could do.
“We looked around and
thought, we’ve got all these will-
ing and able bodies,” said Bill Sw-
enson, commercial sales rep for
Miller. “We can do more than do-
nate paint. We can take it on and
get involved — so that’s what we
did. It just made sense.”
Painting a Better Tomorrow,
which finds around 100 volun-
teers working on several different
facilities one day every Novem-
ber, is one of the HBF’s flagship
annual efforts to help nonprofit
homeless shelters and service
providers, but it’s not the only
one. And from donating supplies
for a building project to attending
the annual trap shoot, it’s incred-
ibly easy — and rewarding — to
get involved with the Foundation.
“There are many, many ways to
support the Foundation, and they
all end up being beneficial not
only to our nonprofit partners,
but to all those who help out as
well,” said Ken Cowdery, execu-
tive director of the HBF.
The HBF usually undertakes
several building projects each
year that involve new construc-
tion or renovation.
“Our greatest need on those
projects is for builder captains,
skilled professionals who serve
as general contractors on our
projects,” Cowdery said. “We also
always appreciate donated or dis-
counted materials and supplies.”
Companies and groups can also
adopt an entire project as well.
Tentative projects under consid-
eration for this year include a tran-
sitional housing facility for at-risk
youth who are leaving foster care
and a homeless women’s shelter.
Similarly, the HBF holds regular
“Care Days”, which finds volun-
teers taking on repairs, mainte-
nance and other projects at facili-
ties completed by the Foundation
in the past.
“I keep hearing from companies
how they love getting their teams
together outside of the office to
work on these projects,” Cowdery
said. “It can be a great team-build-
ing experience and really foster
camaraderie.”
The Foundation also sponsors
fund-raising events throughout
the year, from a summer party at
the NW Natural Street of Dreams
and the annual auction in April
to its wildly popular summertime
trap shoot.
Materials and products do-
nated to the Foundation are tax-
deductible, and those who get
involved receive plenty of promo
and gratitude for their efforts.
“We are very interested in ac-
knowledging the work that all
our volunteers and donors con-
tribute,” Cowdery said.
“The nice thing about the
Foundation,” Swenson added, “is
that it’s so easy to get involved.
You can give as little or as much
time as you want. It’s a heck of
a lot of fun, and you leave there
with just a great feeling.”

With the Home Builders Foundation, it’s easy to give — and receive
Since 2004, the Home Build-
ers Foundation (HBF) has been
awarding scholarships to high
school and college students pur-
suing a career within the home
building industry. To date, more
than $150,000 has been awarded
to students in our community
all in an effort to in-
crease opportunity,
exposure and success
in our building trades.
This year, the Home
Bui lder s Founda -
tion is excited to an-
nounce that we have partnered
with Oregon Student Access
Commission (OSAC) for our 2013
scholarship program.
OSAC’s mission is to create a
college-going culture for all Or-
egonians by providing access
through information, mentoring,
and financial support. By partner-
ing with OSAC, our scholarship
applicants will have online ac-
cess to HBF scholarships plus 450
other scholarship opportunities!
The HBF Workforce Development
Scholarship Committee will still
select the scholarship winners,
but OSAC will be administering
the programs.
The Home Builders Foundation
has four scholarships funds avail-
able: the Gary E. Milgard High
School Scholarship- with priority
given to graduates of
the ACE Mentoring
Program, the Jim Ir-
vine Statewide Schol-
arship Fund, Cobalt
Excel lence Award
and the Professional
Remodelers Organization Award.
