SHERWOOD — Last year, the Sherwood
High School football team picked up its
second Class 5A state championship in the
past three seasons.
But the Bowmen aren’t about to rest on their
laurels.
In fact, they just might be getting downright
greedy — as they’re looking to add to their
state championship trophy collection this year.
“Our motto this year is ‘new team, same
dream,’” Sherwood coach Greg Lawrence.
“We’re reloading again, but we have a lot of
experience and we plan to do what we do. We
want to win league and then go win state. We
want to leave 5A in a big way —we want to go
back to back.”
The Bowmen certainly look to be capable of
reaching that lofty goal, as they have a strong,
deep group of returnees from last year’s team
that beat Marist 46-20 in the 2012 state champi-
onship contest on their way to wrapping up a
13-0 season.
“This team has the potential to be better
than last year,” Lawrence said. “We really do,
and we want to get better every day.”
Offense
Sherwood’s version of the Wing-T offense
was close to being unstoppable last year, when
the Bowmen averaged 476 rushing yards a
game.
It could be more of the same this year.
“We have a log of firepower,” Lawrence said.
“I think we’re going to be hard to stop on of-
fense.”
Sherwood has a new starting quarterback to
guide that offense in senior Kevin Larkin
(6-foot-3, 190 pounds).
“He’s got a strong arm, and he can also run,”
Lawrence said.
Last year, Larkin completed 13 of 22 pass at-
tempts for 174 yards and four touchdowns.
Seniors Tyler Booth (6-1, 180) and Tristan
Flint (5-8, 140) will be the backups.
The Bowmen, as usual, seem to have a pleth-
ora of halfbacks. That crew will be led by se-
nior starters Keegan Lawrence (6-0, 190) and
Scott Skurdahl (6-1, 208). Last year, Lawrence
ran for 832 yards on 79 carries (a 10.5 yards-
per-carry average) with 12 rushing touch-
downs. Skurdahl ran for 390 yards on 33 car-
ries.
“Keegan has put on 20 pounds since last
year, and he’s faster,” Greg Lawrence said.
“And Scott is a powerful, big kid.”
Other halfbacks for Sherwood include se-
nior Tanner Shadbolt (5-8, 180), senior Spencer
Clay (6-1, 185), junior Mason Rivers (5-8, 170)
and senior Nick Dickson (5-7, 165).
Sherwood also has a strong one-two punch
at fullback with seniors Mickey Schaefer (6-1,
180) and Jake Reimer (5-11, 210). Schaefer ran
for 1,005 yards on 100 carries with 14 rushing
touchdown last year. Reimer rushed for 389
yards on 53 carries.
“They’re different kind of runners,” Law-
rence said. “Mickey is more shifty, and Jake is
just a strong runner.”
Seniors Brian Lee (6-0, 190) and Jordan Hod-
ney (5-10, 195) will also see action at fullback.
All of those Sherwood backs should benefit
from running behind a strong, proven offen-
sive line.
“We’re looking good in the line,” Lawrence
said. “We’ve got some experienced kids there.”
Senior Ryan Jurgens (5-8, 205) returns at
center. Senior Cam Theimann (6-2, 220) and
senior Brae Riess (6-0, 210) will also see action
there.
Senior AndrewRice (5-11, 195) is a returning
starter at guard. Senior Nick Aspen (5-11, 210),
junior C.J. Alley (6-0, 200), senior Martin Layna
(5-5, 240) and junior David Haimoto (5-10, 190)
will also play at guard.
The Bowmen have a pair of bookends at the
tackle spots in senior Travis Kotowski (6-2,
250) and junior Saul Urzua (6-2, 315). Junior
TimMoran (6-1, 255) and junior Michael Stock-
er (6-1, 260) will also see action there.
Sherwood also has a pair of standouts at
tight end in senior Jordan Kurahara (6-11, 235)
and junior Zak Taylor (6-3, 205).
“Jordan is a great blocker,” Lawrence said.
“Zak also is a good blocker, and he’s an awe-
some receiver.”
