tlers include the Hall Family
from Kentucky, the Denneys,
who lived near Scholls Ferry
Road and Hall Blvd., and Orin
S. Allen, from western New
York. In the late 1940s, Law-
rence Hall bought 640 acres of
Beaverdam and built a gristmill
with his brother near what is
nowWalker Road. After that
first land claim, Thomas Den-
ney followed in 1848, building
the area’s first sawmill. In 1860,
a toll plank road was complet-
ed over a trail now known as
the commercialized, congested
Canyon Road.
STILL ON TRACK
— In the
what goes around, comes
around department ... The Or-
egon Electric Railway, con-
structed in 1905 to link central
Portland with the then-outpost
of Garden Home, was a popu-
lar transportation option that
serves as a prescient proto-
type of modern-day streetcars
and light-rail systems that
weave an ever-widening web
through the metro area. Trav-
eling along what is now Mult-
nomah Boulevard between
Oleson Road to Allen Boule-
vard at 92nd Avenue, the elec-
tric train’s tracks branched at
Garden Home on routes west
to Forest Grove and south to
Salem. By 1922, 65 electric
trains hummed through the
Westside communities, one ev-
ery 20 minutes. Following a de-
cline, likely because of that
evil gas car contraption, pas-
senger service was pulled in
1933. By 1941, the tracks were
abandoned to make way for
vehicular roads.
SILENT LEGACY
—Anyone
remember watching silent pic-
tures from the 1920s such as
“Crashing Courage,” “Flames
of Passion,” “Scars of Hate,”
“The Frame-Up,” or “The Vow
of Vengeance”? If you don’t, it
