SHERWOOD COMMUNITY PROFILE
S
herwood has grown faster than any other city in Ore-
gon in the last few years, with 52 percent of its resi-
dents arriving between 1995 and 1998, according to
the 2000 census.
The 2010 census put Sherwood’s population at 18,194.
The area was first inhabited by the Tualatin Indians be-
fore the first wagon train passed through in 1843. In 1889, the
town of Smockville was platted after the Transcontinental
Railroad signed a right of way agreement with local sawmill
owner James C. Smock. The town was redubbed Sherwood
by British businessmen when it was incorporated in1892.
Sawmills, saloons, a tannery and a cannery (which closed
in the early 1970s) spurred Sherwood’s early success.
Today, Sherwood is known for its small-town charm, its
family-oriented atmosphere and as a gateway to wine coun-
try. Its historic Old Town, now boasting a number of im-
provements, thanks to a series of urban renewal projects,
lures residents and visitors with antique stores and gift
shops.
The community continues to attract housing development
while retaining its character with the Robin Hood Festival
and other longtime, small-town traditions, including its thick
little monthly newspaper, the Sherwood Gazette.
