gesting someo ne may have
once been trapped inside, the
window ensuring that
wouldn’t happen again. (That
vault will soon become a wine
cellar after it was recently an-
nounced that the former cof-
fee shop will soon be home to
Bank of Oswego’s Sherwood
Business Banking Center.
A piece of Starburst can-
dy proved to be the undoing
for a burglar caught stealing a
40-inch flat-screen television
in Sherwood in 2009. Although
a search by a canine dog went
cold, police found a partially
chewed candy nearby, had it
tested by crime lab techni-
cians found the burglar’s DNA
on it. That, along with the fact
that he was found guilty of
other area break-ins, sent him
to prison.
Two magazines, Money
and Family Circle, named
Sherwood one of the top plac-
es to live in the country. Fami-
ly Circle magazine named
Sherwood one of its top 10
towns or cities for families in
August 2009. In 2006, the city
was finalist for an “All Ameri-
can City ranking, and in 2007
Sherwood was listed as No. 18
in Money magazine’s best
places to live.
Sherwood’s old brickyard
in Old Town
supplied all
the brick
needed to
construct
many nota-
ble Portland
structures,
especially
those on
First and
Second
streets. Be-
cause of
Portland’s
thirst for
brick, few
brick buildings got build in
Sherwood before the brick-
yard closed in 1896.
That parking lot across
the street from Symposium
Coffee (heading south) on
First and Pine streets was
once home to two businesses.
One was the old Robin Hood
Theater, a longtime theater
that was torn down in the
early 2000s due to seismic
concerns. The other was what
was known as the Lawrenz
building, once home to Law-
renz’s Ga-
rage, a Ford
dealership.
Opened in
1916, the
proprietor,
Emil Law-
renz, would
teach cus-
tomers to
drive with
every car
sold. The
former ga-
rage, later a
restaurant,
burned
down in the mid- to late-
1980s.
And speaking of the Law-
renzes, they lived in the home
that houses Symposium Cof-
fee, which was constructed by
M.M. Fitch (who also built the
Morback House). The Mor-
back house was the home of
James Morback, who served
30 years as Sherwood’s mayor
and who is believed to hold
the record as the longest-run-
ning mayor of any city in the
state. The home now houses
the Sherwood Historical Soci-
ety.
And while we’re on the
topic of the Morback House, in
2006 members of what is
known as the Sherwood Para-
normal Investigative Research
& Intuitive Team (or SPIRIT)
were leading a tour when they
came to the part of the home
where Joseph Morback died
(now a bathroom). When one
of investigators began talking,
the toilet reportedly flushed
on its own. Also, former city
employees (it once housed the
Sherwood Police Department)
have said they heard footsteps
on the stairs when they were
alone in the home.

ROOFERS YOU CAN COUNT ON
“Finding a contractor we
could trust was the focus
of the Red Fox Hills Condo’s
Board of Directors. We were
leery after litigation with
the last roofers. We’ve been
with Pacific West Roofing
for the past 10 years. They
listen to our concerns;
consult with us; always
show up on-time; and they
provide quality work and fair
pricing. Pacific West Roofing
has renewed our confidence
that good contractors exist.”
