B
eaverton’s expanding restaurant
scene will clearly take you around
the world and back. For some, salty
and savory pleases the palate.
For others, the sweet tooth dominates. In
Downtown Beaverton, there are plenty
of sugary choices, whether you need a
doughnut on the go, or you want to order a
cake for a special occasion.
When you think wedding, the iconic
Beaverton Bakery, in the center of the
business district, comes to mind. Beaverton
Bakery is a full-line retail bakery.
At the helm is Carrie Ann Schubert.
“We still make everything by hand,” she
said. “We’re not an automated shop.”
This family bakery is known for its
doughnuts, Danish, bread, cakes, specialty
cookies and pastries. Not only can you buy
a dozen doughnuts for your colleagues at
work, you can also order a scrumptious
and photogenic cake for your next family
wedding.
“We feed anywhere from a small party of
30 to a large party of a thousand,” Schubert
pointed out.
In thedoughnut category,manycustomers
choose a longtime favorite. “We’ve been
famous for our maple bars for over 50 years,”
Schubert said. “We’re an old-fashioned
bakery. We use sugar, and we use butter —
and we use lots of it.”
Another business that caters to the sweet
tooth is The Dessert Tray, where you’ll
only find desserts. This business focuses
on cookies, bars, brownies, pies and cakes.
Popular items include the chocolate rum
mousse and the rich and tempting Italian
almond cake (this single-layer cake is perfect
for picnics).
Robin Morgan, who co-owns The Dessert
Tray with Angel Bennett, said her personal
favorites includeGerman chocolate cake and
carrot cake. The Dessert Tray is preparing
for a major event this summer.
“This year we’re doing the Bite of Oregon,
which we haven’t done before,” Morgan
said, adding that The Dessert Tray plans
on offering cookies, cupcakes, brownies and
oatmeal bars at the event, to be held next
month at TomMcCall Waterfront Park.
At The Dessert Tray, you can order
birthday or wedding cakes, or you can drop
in for a cookie or a slice of cake. For cookie
lovers, snickerdoodles and chocolate chip
are great choices.
“We love making desserts here,” Morgan
said. “We love eating desserts, and we want
to share that with everybody.”
A short distance away, on Farmington
Road, Honey Toast Café is a great location,
if you simply want to chill out in the middle
of a frantic day.
Yes, you’ll find panini sandwiches and
appetizers (including wings, sweet potato
fries and fried tofu), but it’s the honey toast
that makes this a Sweet Eats location. Honey
toast is made of Taiwanese-inspired sweet
bread that’s sprinkled with powdered sugar
and topped with a variety of sweet goodies,
including ice cream and fresh fruits. This
yummy dessert is topped with a sauce.
Owner Tracy Hong said the most popular
choice isHoneyToast Deluxe, which features
mixed seasonal berries, mountain berry ice
cream, two macaroons, with both caramel
and chocolate sauce. Another favorite is
Classic Honey Toast, with vanilla ice cream,
honey and caramel sauce. Chocolate lovers
need to try the Chocolate Symphony, with
Oreo’s, chocolate ice cream, chocolate wafer
roll and chocolate sauce.
Say hello to a neighbor at Honey Toast
Café as you enjoy coffee, espresso drinks or
some Bubble Tea (in many flavors).
Honey Toast Café is new to Beaverton; it
has been in operation for about six months.
“I get to know a lot of people,” Hong said.
“I know a lot of business owners — they’re
being very supportive. I know a lot of the
residents, as well.”
