HERE’S A CLOSER LOOK AT WESTERN

WASHINGTON COUNTY

As Judy Garland famously observed in the classic 1939 film

“The Wizard of Oz,” there’s really no place like home.

That being said, while considering how you’ll spend your time in the spring, summer, fall and winter

to come, why not take advantage of what Closer Look has to offer in the way of encouragement to work and play right
here in western Washington County?

Our annual resource guide is chock-full of information designed to help you rediscover and appreciate your town,

your neighborhood and nearby amenities. Inside these pages you'll find the best places to get a great a glass of wine,
hike a nature trail — or buy a new car. We’ve got the skinny on local festivals and fairs, educational programs and

recreational opportunities, all year round.

Whether it’s the Banks Fourth of July celebration, Centro Cultural Children’s Day in Cornelius, the Forest Grove
Concours d’Elegance antique car show or Gaston’s Wapato Showdown, you’ll find the makings of a great weekend in

our calendar of events.
Take in the sights, sounds and flavor of a Wednesday farmers market, savor some island flavor at Pacific University’s

annual lu’au or see a play at Theatre in the Grove. Venture out to Hagg Lake for an afternoon of biking or fishing and

feel like a kid again at the Washington County Fair and Rodeo. Head for the starting line at a community fun run.
With some open space on your calendar and a bit of imagination, this Closer Look guide — produced by the News-

Times in cooperation with our local Chambers of Commerce — will assist you in planning a year’s worth of discoveries.

While you’re out and about, remember to patronize area businesses and keep your hard-earned dollars in your
community, providing jobs for your neighbors and a stable tax base for public services we all need and use. Among

their ranks are purveyors of handmade jewelry, wood products, organic produce and fine wines. Closer Look can steer

you to the best places to get your taxes done, your home sold or your bumper fixed.
If you take a closer look at the businesses and service organizations listed in these pages, we think you’ll better

understand why our little corner of Oregon stands out from all the others. ■
