Public Safety
Being recognized as one of the safest
cities in the Pacific Northwest for the fifth
year in a row is a tremendous point of
pride. The Beaverton Police Department
is nationally recognized for its innovative
programs and a true community policing
approach. Our city thrives because people
feel safe to enjoy the community.

Space Challenges
The Beaverton Police Department is
currently experiencing significant space
challenges. The department moved into its
current headquarters, in City Hall on Griffith
Drive, in 1986. At that time, it was described
by the City Council as a temporary move. It
was projected the building would meet the
city’s needs for 5 – 10 years. Today, more
than 25 years later, the police department
has outgrown the space.
A volunteer advisory committee has
recommended that the City Council
establish a new public safety facility. Today,
the police are operating in less than one-
third of the space they need. The current
headquarters lacks interview rooms for
crime victims. Criminal suspects share the
same areas, including restrooms, as public
visitors to the building. A 2010 audit found
there is a high probability of serious security
incident in the city’s municipal court. The
building also does not meet legally required
essential building standards for emergency
service buildings. For all of these reasons,
the city will be prioritizing a plan for new
public safety facility over the coming year.
Fiscal Responsibility
Beaverton is unique among governments.
The city does not utilize its full taxing
authority. City leadership strives to live
within its means and has not increased the
tax rate in three years. The city’s finance
department is nationally recognized for its
good work. The city has added new business
outreach support programs, including
workforce training dollars, enterprise zones,
micro lending programs, small business
assistance, and more.
